Relationship is both central and sacred to the spiritual direction process. As spiritual directors we are privileged people who companion and guide directees as they attend to their relationships with themselves, with God, with others and with the Universe. We also bring to the process our own ways of being in relationship with them. The relational paradigm, one in which the director holds power with rather than power over the directee is the model we strive to follow. It is also a model whereby we embrace the values of being in right relationship with the other.

Our on-going development and deepening as directors call us to re-examine periodically the relationship dynamic that is at work in our sessions with those we direct. With time and experiences our conscious and unconscious beliefs and attitudes can shift, inviting us to ask questions such as:
· What is the underlying operative paradigm that defines who I am as a spiritual director?
· What are the implications of this paradigm and how do they show up in the dynamics of particular spiritual direction sessions?
· How well does what I profess about relationship with and for directees align with how I actually operate in the direction process?
· What are the characteristics and values of a relational paradigm within the spiritual direction process?
· How does this relational paradigm challenge me and my understanding and practice of spiritual direction?

In this workshop, we will explore these and other questions around relationships within the spiritual direction process with a focus on describing and experiencing the dynamics of the Relational Paradigm. A variety of reflective group exercises will be used to help us better understand and appreciate the inherent values of the Relational Paradigm. We will identify ways to put these values into practice to foster a deeper experience for those we direct.

Have you ever had a “gut feeling” and wondered whether to follow it? Have you disregarded this feeling, made a decision and regretted the outcome? We can count the numerous times that we have sensed in the body a kind of information that has come to us quickly. Perhaps we felt as if we were being warned or advised to take a different course of action. We may have acted on or ignored this subtle yet important form of information.
What is the intuition? It is a capacity that we all possess for “knowing” in a way not mediated by the rational mind. It is the still, small voice inside committed to our well-being. It is like a radio signal that we receive that brings valuable information concerning health, relationships and the spiritual journey. The intuition puts us in touch with the deep, experiential wisdom we hold within, namely the Great Mystery/Divine.
How can we access and develop the intuition? Attend this workshop and explore the possibilities. Using a mix of presentation, group discussion and exercises, we will “tune in” and focus on listening skills, practice body/mind/spirit and heart awareness and learn how to discern and trust intuitive information. Finally, we will explore the benefits of using the intuition as an inner resource to guide us in our everyday spiritual lives.

Simple Practices to Alleviate the Symptoms of Stress

6:30 to 8:30 pm
St. Joseph Center
1501 S. Layton Blvd.
Milwaukee

Fee: $15

Stress and its symptoms can affect us physically, emotionally and spiritually. We may experience stress through headaches or pain in neck/shoulders. We may have trouble sleeping or feel fatigued, sad or anxious. We may find ourselves becoming critical, isolated or overwhelmed. We may feel distanced from the Sacred.

This program teaches a number of the self-care practices featured in Training in Healing and Transformation, the intensive workshop we present each year in collaboration with CAPACITAR. If you’ve been curious about CAPACITAR, this program will give you an introduction.

Join us to learn gentle tai chi movement, calming breath work, simple finger holds and much more. All the practices are flexible enough to accommodate men and women of all ages and physical abilities. This program will show you how to select the practices that feel best for your body. If you have attended this program in the past, come back for a refresher and to experience the positive energy of the practices in community.

Marjorie Wilbur is the Executive Director of The Center to BE and a spiritual companion. She has taught these self-healing practices to a wide variety of audiences in Wisconsin.

The power of nature to heal the heart and grow the human spirit was recognized and honored by earlier cultures, but is largely forgotten in our own. The expanding field of EcoPsychology is advancing the application of “nature interaction” to the modern practices of self-help, education, counseling and spiritual development. Philip Chard is a leader in this field, having written one of the first books (The Healing Earth, 1994) to apply the principles of what he calls “Nature’s Way” to personal and spiritual development.

This workshop will provide participants with an experiential immersion in the ideas and methods of Nature’s Way. We will explore how contact with nature can help people overcome debilitating emotions, make difficult choices, heal loss and grief, gain self-understanding, nurture creativity, promote personal development and find spiritual “bedrock”.

The beautiful and spacious grounds of The Cedar Valley Retreat Center outside of West Bend in the Kettle Moraine will be an integral part of the program. (for directions go to www.cedarvalleycenter.org). We will spend time outdoors; please wear clothing appropriate to the day’s weather.

Philip Chard is a nature therapist (a psychotherapist who uses nature interaction to foster emotional healing), a newspaper columnist, book author, nature photographer, nationally acclaimed speaker and trainer, accomplished wilderness backpacker and Great Lakes sailor.
